Life Link High School Model United Nations Conference
The High School Model United Nations Conference (HSMUN) is part of Life Link’s efforts at involving the youth in the discussion of global issues. It is an annual Five-day conference which brings together, youth and student from various high schools and all over the country to deliberate on global issues affecting them.
HSMUN combines series of training workshops, discussion forums and seminars aimed at equipping the youth with valuable leadership qualities and skills necessary to establish them as potential leaders. During these training sessions, participants are taken through a comprehensive curriculum aimed at educating them and enhancing their analytical and research skills, presentation, negotiation, and diplomatic strategies used to arrive at resolutions.
The conference also offers participants the opportunity to meet delegates from different walks of life with varying perspectives on the same global issues. Whiles interacting and sharing ideas, delegates learn to appreciate, understand and accept varying opinions on the same global issue. Participants are well able to enhance their research skills through smaller group research on different aspects of chosen topics. This also builds team-work skills in them, which also enables effective dialoging.
Typically, the HSMUN is a unique modeled experience of the structure and workings of the United Nations. The climax of the training workshops, forums and seminars is the simulation of one of the main organs of the United Nations; usually the Security Council. This is the time when participants are put into action, and test their various skills acquired during the training sessions. It is also the “magical moment” of the conference as delegates strive to navigate the rules as well as reach a consensus on the issues at stake, thus, bringing to bear, the impacts of their training period on observers and delegates alike.
The entire conference period is however interspersed with lots of social times such as activity periods, down-times, beach trips and site-seeing, and the dinner on the last night. These times offer delegates the opportunity to make memories to ever cherish. HSMUN is therefore a total blend of good times; an experience worth having.
